Topic 1:This House would ban child actors.

Opening

Imagine being 8 years old and working longer hours than your parents. You’re not at school. You’re not playing with friends. You’re on set, filming take after take while everyone around you says, “Just one more.” This is the reality for many child actors around the world. On Proposition, we believe that no child should be forced to grow up too fast. That’s why we support the motion: This House would ban child actors.

We believe this debate is about what kind of world we want to build for children. One where they are protected, educated, and free to enjoy childhood—or one where they are treated like tiny adults, put to work in high-pressure environments that harm them in the long run. We’re proud to propose.

1.Protecting Childhood

Banning child actors is necessary because every child deserves a proper childhood. Acting jobs often require kids to spend long hours rehearsing and filming, which means they have less time for school, play, and rest. For example, famous child actors like Macaulay Culkin, from the movie "Home Alone," often worked long days, sometimes over 10 hours, and had limited time for regular childhood activities. This leads to children missing out on essential experiences that help them grow emotionally and socially. The impact of this loss is huge in magnitude since it affects thousands of child actors worldwide. The risk is high, as child actors commonly report feeling lonely or isolated, and this happens immediately, disrupting their childhood experiences during crucial developmental years.

2.Preventing Exploitation and Abuse

Child actors are often at risk of being exploited or abused because they are too young to protect themselves or fully understand their rights. In some cases, children are pushed into acting by parents or agents who prioritize money over the child's wellbeing. An example of this was the situation faced by young stars such as Drew Barrymore, who publicly shared her struggles with substance abuse from a young age due to pressures from her acting environment. The magnitude of harm here is severe, affecting both physical and mental health and potentially leading to lifelong issues. The risk is unfortunately high, with many well-documented cases of child actors suffering abuse or exploitation. This harm begins immediately once children enter the industry, highlighting the urgent need for banning child actors to ensure their safety.

3. Ensuring Education and Future Opportunities

Child actors often miss out on proper education due to filming schedules and commitments, hurting their chances of future success outside acting. For example, many child actors, like Lindsay Lohan, experienced disruptions to their education, resulting in significant struggles later in life to build stable careers outside entertainment. Without proper schooling, these children face challenges in adulthood, limiting their opportunities and independence. The magnitude of this problem affects a large group—every child actor who prioritizes acting over education. The risk of long-term negative consequences, such as unemployment or financial instability in adulthood, is high. These consequences usually become visible in early adulthood, making it essential to ban child acting now to protect children's futures.
