在GRE填空题中，一些熟悉的词语常常会用到它们不太常见的含义。例如，“founder” 常考查其 “失败” 的意思，“flag” 常考查其 “下降/衰退” 的意思，而 “betray” 常考查其 “显示” 的意思。因此，在做题时，如果熟悉的意思在语法和语义上不合理，就要想到它们不太常见的含义。当然，前提是你要知道它们有这些不太常见的含义。
例如，在Webster词典中，“take for granted”有两个看似相反但实际相关的意思：1. to assume (something) as true, real, unquestionable, or to be expected: to take as true or as a fact without actual proof；2. to value (something or someone) too lightly: to fail to properly notice or appreciate (someone or something that should be valued)。前者表示认为很多事情显然就是如此；后者表示不重视、不关心。看起来一个正面、一个反面，但都源自于“把什么当成理所应当”这个字面翻译。认为一件事情理当如此，所以无需证明也认为是对的；认为一件事情理当如此，所以并不关心。
在阅读文章时很难通过语法判断到底是哪个意思，因此更好地依靠上下文和语义合理性来判断。
在GRE填空题中也出现过几次“take for granted”的表达，我们来分析一下分别是什么意思。
Responsibility for the nation’s decline rests squarely with a people who take for granted their claims to preeminence but do not ________ interest in or commitment to actually maintaining it.
foresee/rebuff/evince/reject/predict/betray
主干Responsibility…rests squarely with a people…大概就是责任全在美方的类似表达。 就是都怪这个民族，他们主张自己的领导地位，并把这种主张视为理所应当。如果将“take for granted”理解为“不重视”，那么逻辑上看后面就应该填reject/rebuff（拒绝），因为前面是不重视（负向），转折之后就应该是正向的，“not”是否定，所以要填一个负向词。 也就是说他们既不重视又不拒绝努力。但这样与前面说责任在谁身上并不能匹配。把责任归咎于“并未拒绝努力”的民族身上很难说得通。 因此这里用的应该是第一个意思：即这些人觉得自己民族肯定是世界灯塔（领导地位），但又不努力维护这样的地位。剩下四个词中foresee和predict属于一组（预测），但“预测”放进去与前后也没什么关系。因此选evince和betray（显示/显露）。整句话大致意思就是：国家衰落的责任完全在于那些认为自己有优越地位但并未表现出对维护这种地位感兴趣或承诺的民族。
That guild of experts has always appraised the economic stimulation plan as bootless, while the advocates of the policy do not take their _____ evaluation for granted.
tendentious/meticulous/detracting/indifferent/ubiquitous/deprecatory
前面的 “appraise” 看起来与 “praise” 有点像，但实际上并不是夸奖，而只是评价的意思。它既可以夸奖也可以批评。接着说 “appraise as bootless”（评价为无用），也能看出这里是在批评。后面要填的是怎样的评价，这个 “evaluation” 正好与 “appraise” 对应上了。前面评价为无用，相应地这就是一种不好的评价，所以选 “detracting” 和 “deprecatory” 这一组词。虽然 “tendentious” 也带有负面意味，但没有同近义词对应。
这里的 “taken for granted” 也是第一个意思：即一些专家说经济刺激计划是无用功，但支持经济刺激政策的人并不认为这种负面评价就一定是对的。
Although the official United States poverty rate measure is now by and large taken for granted, having become widely regarded with the passage of time as the most (i)_____ method of calibrating the prevalence of material deprivation in American society, the measure was originally an (ii)_____ and in practical terms appears to be a (iii)_____ descriptor of poverty trends in modern America. 第一空所在的 having…society 这一部分在解释前面说官方标准被当成理所应当。因此，这一空要体现出如何被当成理所应当。如果将“take for granted”理解为“不重视”，那么没有选项能对应上。因此就理解为“即使没有实际证明也认为是真实”的意思，相应比较合理的就是 “natural”。因为随着时间过去，这个官方标准被认为最“自然”的方法，所以现在具有了一种无需多言也被认为正确的地位。
前面虽然部分说大家觉得就应该用这个方法，相应地后面转折就应该吐槽。因此第二空和第三空要填负向词汇，所以选 “ad hoc improvisation”（临时凑合）和 “problematic”（成问题）。通过最后那个完整句子也能看出来：后面说这个方法结果与其他直接相关于全国生存条件指标不符合，也就说明了这个方法并不好。
通过以上三道题我们可以看出，在 GRE 填空题中，“take for granted” 更多地使用其 “to assume (something) as true, real, unquestionable, or to be expected: to take as true or as a fact without actual proof” 的含义。
