Job description

Motion systems are used throughout the semiconductor and high-tech industry for fast and extremely precise positioning in e.g. microscopes and chip production process. Motion system design unites structural mechanics and dynamics, electromagnetic actuation, sensing and control. To achieve optimal performance of these mechatronic systems, the AIDEAL project aims to develop a holistic AI-based design framework capable of considering all these aspects in an integrated manner. A key part of this is the mechanical integration, i.e. the design of the structure that holds everything together and provides the necessary structural stiffness and dynamic behavior. With the availability of additive manufacturing, tremendous design freedom has been unlocked, which allows for radically new high-performance structural designs. Additionally, advancements in computer vision and language modeling allow for designs from different domains and scales to transform the creativity of AI-driven generative design models. The endless possibilities and high complexity of the design task exceed the capabilities of experienced human designers. For this reason, we have already successfully developed specific computational design methods based on topology optimization to generate superior mechanical designs. This project aims to develop a new generation of these computational design tools by enhancing them with AI concepts, with the aim to accelerate the design process even further and increase the diversity and optimality of the obtained designs. This PhD project will closely interact with two other PhD researchers that focus on the electromagnetic actuation system and the control design, as well as with a consortium of high tech companies supporting the AIDEAL project. The project plan includes the joint realization of full-scale functional hardware demonstrator, for which this PhD project is responsible for the mechanical design methodology.

The intended starting date of this PhD position is October 1st, 2025.

阿姆斯特丹大学

PhD Position on the Effects of Digital Media on Youth

UvA | Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

Salary range: €2901 - €3707

APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 1, 2025

岗位制博士 |代尔夫特理工大学、阿姆斯特丹大学最新岗位制博士项目分享

Are you interested in understanding the impact of digital media on youth? We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student who wants to explore the impact of digital technologies (i.e., smartphones and/or video games) on children and early adolescents’ attention and well-being.

What are you going to do

You will be part of a larger project that investigates the effects of digital technologies on children and adolescents who use these technologies for the first time. Specifically, the project will examine whether and how these technologies influence children’s attention and well-being. In this project, data collection will be based on 1) a randomized controlled field trial among novice video game players, and 2) a longitudinal field study among novice smartphone users. As a PhD student you will be involved in the data collection of one or both projects and will work in close collaboration with the other team members.

During your PhD project, you will:

  • Review and synthesize the literature surrounding the impact of digital technologies on attention and well-being among first-time media users
  • Design and conduct a controlled longitudinal field experiment which examines the effects of digital technologies on children. These field experiments will last 6 – 12 months and will be conducted in the field (i.e., by visiting families or schools)
  • Familiarize yourself with and apply longitudinal data analysis techniques
  • Write up academic papers for publication in high-impact scientific journals and presenting them at (inter)national conferences.
  • You will engage in teaching activities within our department (up to 10% of your time).

What do you have to offer

You have:

  • A research master’s or equivalent degree (with a minimum of 120 ECTS) in communication science or a related social-science field (e.g., psychology, educational sciences, etc.), or expect to obtain it soon;
  • an interest in topics associated with the impact of digital technologies on youth (or a related field);
  • a demonstrated interest in quantitative methods; experience with longitudinal data analyses is a plus
  • skills and willingness to handle complex datasets;
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills with proficiency in Dutch or a willingness to learn Dutch.

Your application & contact

Please submit your application as a single .pdf file, including:

  • your motivation letter (max 1 page)
  • CV
  • Overview of courses you have taken and the grades you have received
  • A writing sample (this can be a course assignment, your master or bachelor thesis, etc).

You can apply via the red button until April 30, 2025. Interviews will take place at the end of May / beginning of June 2025. In case of equal qualifications, internal candidates will be given preference over external candidates.
